Test procedure

The Pap test involves collecting cells from the cervix and spreading them on a slide for examination under a microscope to detect the presence of any abnormal cells in the cervix. These abnormal cells are caused by HPV (human papillomavirus), which, depending on the strain, may cause genital warts, pre-cancer and, more rarely, cervical, penile or anal cancer.
